The global trend known as STEM is an initiative that seeks to bring girls and adolescents from different parts of the world closer to starting a career in areas related to science, mathematics, technology and engineering. This with the purpose of reducing the discrimination gap in the workforce of this branch.
A study carried out by UNESCO in 2019 indicated that only 35% of students entering higher education related to STEM are women and, consequently, only 1 in 5 jobs in the industry are held by them.
Although jobs in the field of science and technology are the best paid, they maintain a large inequality gap in the opening of opportunities for the female gender.
That is why Uber, in alliance with Epic France Mobile Number List Queen and Tecnolochicas of the Televisa Foundation, undertook the “Uber Ellas” project, which seeks to promote the teaching of science and technology with the aim of developing interest in innovation, sustainability and social well-being.
Daniela Cuellar, Uber's communications manager, stated that the company's commitment to diversity in technology and science begins from within its offices and it is essential to look for possibilities to extend them to society.
“We want to contribute to eliminating the stereotype that science is not for women and minimize the gap that exists today in workplaces. That is why we are committed to raising awareness and making girls have a close and accessible experience with STEM competitions.” Daniela Cuellar.
Likewise, he explained that this is the first stage of launching Uber Ellas in Mexico, because Brazil was the pioneer in presenting the project.
“Brazil helped a lot as a guide in logistics, adding knowledge so that the event could be carried out well. There was already a first experience and the learning they shared helped lead the way.”
From this, we sought to extend the scope of the project worldwide to countries such as Chile and Colombia, where each one will be in charge of making alliances with local organizations to carry out the event.
For the start-up in Mexico, they found Fundación Televisa as allies through Tecnolochicas and Cuantrix, who were in charge of identifying vulnerable areas that generally do not have access to technology in the school environment, such as computer classes, computing or science fairs. .
With the objective of covering only institutions that do not have access to technology programs, Day School No. 45, Casa Hogar Pax and Casa Hogar Margarita were identified, of which they gathered 200 girls between 7 and 12 years old who participated in the launch.
